The next stop was Bonampak. It’s not a large site, and it’s hard to get to its location in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle. However, it has lots of intact murals still kept on site.
This is also the location of our first serious injury or health incident. One woman who was nearly back down the pyramid fell can just her leg on the limestone steps. She got something like 27 stitches in the end. Luckily another woman in the group was not just a doctor but a trauma specialist and was able to stabilize her for the trip to the clinic.
Just to show how deep in the jungle we were, when our tour leader was taking that woman to the clinic and was asking directions he had to specifically ask if anyone spoke Spanish. Most of the locals speak some form of Mayan.
Hi Matt,
WOW!! These sites are really amazing not to mention remote! How awesome to have seen them.
Can’t wait to talk with you at length when I get home
