Same-same but different

Taxi

  • Japan: Doors open automatically (at least the back do)
  • Australia: A man traveling alone should sit up front

Restaurant

  • Japan: If the register is at the door, you take the bill up yourself
  • Australia: I still haven’t figured out how to get some of these places to give me the bill, sometimes I just right to the register and ask.

Money

  • Japan: 5 and 50 yen coins have a hole in them. Smallest paper bill is 1,00 yen. The Post office and 7-11 have ATMs that take American cards. The exchange rate is good( I think it’s determined by the bank of your account, not the Japanese owner of the ATM), but 7-11 at least only dispensed in multiples of 10,000 yen (about US$110). Cash can be exchanged at the post office or banks at the airport also at good rates, but can be slow. Other places for exchange (like machines in hotel lobbies) have bad rates. Most places don’t take credits cards, so get a lot of cash.
  • Australia: ATMs take American cards at good exchange rates. Lots of places take credit cards. Travelex exchange rate at ADL was terrible. Smallest paper bill is AUS$5. Biggest coin is 50 cents, $1 is smaller and $2 is even smaller than that.
