On Feb. 13 we traveled all day by bus from Merida to Palenque to our lodge in the national park. On Feb. 14 we went to the Palenque archeological site.
While Palenque is not the largest site, you sure do get your money’s worth.
While Pakal’s sarcophagus has been removed to the museum along wiht other items, the red queen’s sarcophagus is still in place.
The “Palace” area has these T-shaped openings that mark the areas uses as an observatory, as the mark solar alignemnts for different days of the year. The Palace also still has some of the colored painting.
Climbing the Temples of the Cross is still allowed, and one still has the original painted inscriptions.
The museum house some of the more delicate findings that could not be left out in the weather, and a large display of Pakal’s sarcophagus with explanations of all the writing on it.
