It took so long to build, Ceausescu couldn’t even stay in power until it was finished.

The capital of the Second Bulgaria Empire was Veliko Tarnovo. Tsarevets Fortress is a proper looking seat of an medieval empire, with a palace, a church, walls and towers and such. A bit of a fixer-upper, though.

The current capital of Bulgaria is Sofia. It is built on the remains of Serdica, which was almost the Second Rome rather than Constantinople. The Edict of Toleration was issued by Galerius there. Lots of the remains were found during the construction of the Sofia metro, and you can see a lot of the restoration in the underground passages.
