A bar on every corner, a volcano in every town

This is the first bar on the way into Pompeii from the port. Location, location, location!


The drainage was worse in Pompeii that in other towns. To make up for that, they put stepping stones in the street to keep your feet clean. The spaces were just right to let standard sized wagons through.

Being buried in ash did wonders for preservation of friezes. Also the technique helps: paint was applied to the wet plaster so that it soaked in, so even if there is some wear the color remains.

Oh, there’s a volcano. What could go wrong? They had enough trouble with earthquakes without worrying about eruptions.
