Chichen Itza, Feb. 11

Our tour leader was late because of airline delays in the US (he had been taking his own vacation in Switzerland). Also, two of our tour group turned up late. Once we got all of that sorted, we were off in a van for our first Mayan site: Chichen Itza.

Chichen Itza is one of the more popular Mayan sites. Perhaps too popular, since you can’t climb up any of the pyramids any more. Continue reading

Rapperswil and Baden, Jan. 27 and 28

I finally broke out of the city of Zürich. Actually both Rapperswil and Baden are outside of the Canton of Zürich as well.

Rapperswil is at the south end of the lake, at the narrow separation between Zürichsee and Obersee.

Rapperswil is known as the “City of Roses” (just like Portland!) though the rose gardens aren’t much to look at in this season. There’s one specifically design for the blind, with signs posted in Braille.

There’s a Capuchin Monastery and of course a big castle on a hill. Continue reading
