They named it for the apples

Kazakhstan is supposed to be where apples are from, and Almaty is in the home of the wild apple Malus sieversii, so you can expect to find a lot of trees.

Never get out of the boat

So after a train, two vans, and a bus, you can make it across the border to Laos.

Then it’s a two day trip by boat to Luang Prabang.
