This is an island in the middle of Lake Peten Itza. It was one of the last holdouts of the Itza Maya against the Spanish, and predictably the Spanish built over everything that the Itza had not leveled behind them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3927.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3927.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3927\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-508\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next night we camped at Tikal.<!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3934.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3934.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3934\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-507\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We actually got there early enough for some of us to catch the sunset in the Grand Plaza.<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3948.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3948.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3948\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-506\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we were up at 4am to see the sunrise on Temple IV.<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3983.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3983.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3983\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-505\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3986.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_3986.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3986\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-504\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If this looks familia, that&#8217; becasue Tikal was the filming location of Yavin IV in Star Wars. The 35-foot back wall is covered with writing.
