Several of us added a day trip to an additional site: the ruins at Uxmal.<\/p>\n<p>Uxmal is notable for being in one of the few hilly areas in the Yucatan.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3459.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3459.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3459\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-443\" \/><\/a><!--more--><br \/>\n This causes problems with water availability. Chichen Itza, for example,  is in flat lowlands over porus limestone, so there&#8217;s lots of fresh water below ground. Uxmal is too high up to reach the groundwater, so the construction included cisterns to capture rain water.<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3462.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3462.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3462\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-442\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Uxmal also has round-cornered construction on post-classical buildings, where Chichen Itza was always square cornered.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3465.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3465.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3465\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-441\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3473.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3473.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3473\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-440\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can still climb some of the pyramids at Uxmal&#8230; but that&#8217;s a lot of damn stairs.<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3508.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3508.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3508\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-437\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3510.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3510.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3510\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3509.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3509.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3509\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a bonus, we also got to see the site at Kabah.
