Also, two of our tour group turned up late. Once we got all of that sorted, we were off in a van for our first Mayan site: Chichen Itza.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3385.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3385.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3385\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-423\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chichen Itza is one of the more popular Mayan sites. Perhaps too popular, since you can&#8217;t climb up any of the pyramids any more.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A closeup of some carvings: the jaguar in the sunken panel represents the sun god in the underworld at night and the quetzal in the raised panel represents the sun god in the sky during the day.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3414.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3414.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3414\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-422\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The big temples are form the post-classical period: they&#8217;re big because they&#8217;ve been built over again and again. There are also earlier buildings form the classical period, such as the observatory: <a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3429.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3429.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3429\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the group in front of another classical era building, the &#8220;Nunnery&#8221;: <a href=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3431.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/atw.pushingrectangles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_3431.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3431\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We then took the ADO commerical coach bus to our hotel in Merida.
